IKOB presents Catinca Malaimare: Emergency Ex

On 24th September 2022, the EUREGIO Very Contemporary 2022 network organises a joint art festival for the first time. Under the title "Very Contemporary Performance-Festival cross-border", institutions from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands will show selected performative positions at the Kunsthaus NRW in Aachen-Kornelimünster. The participating institutions are Greylight Projects (Heerlen NL), IKOB (Eupen BE), Jester (Genk BE), Kunsthaus NRW (Aachen DE), Leopold-Hoesch-Museum (Düren DE), NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein (Aachen DE).

IKOB presents the performance Emergency Ex (2022) by Catinca Malaimare: an intimate encounter between human bodies and machines. In a choreography of movement, sound and light, human and non-human actors become equal collaborators in creating a sensuous and otherworldly environment. Suggesting not just a technical, but an affective codependency between us and our screens, Emergency Ex conjures a not-so-distant future where face and interface have become indistinguishable.

You can check the full schedule of the festival and further information about each performance here.

About the artist:

Catinca Malaimare is a London-based Romanian artist. She completed her postgraduate studies from the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2022. Performing alongside anthropomorphised technologies, Malaimare’s choreography manifests our intimate relationship with photographic tools and the screens onto which they project our visages. She will be taking part in Optoma Artist’s Day 2022, working with the projection technology specialist group exploring the needs of the contemporary digital artists. Malaimare has been awarded a research residency at TUA, Tokyo, JP (2019) and the Ivor Rey Travel Bursary to undertake a residency period in Paris, FR (2020).

Malaimare has exhibited internationally in both institutional and gallery contexts. Recent projects include a solo presentation of the artist’s thesis show in the RA Show 2022, Emergency Ex, 20th Pancevo Biennial (Serbia), led by independent curator Maja Ćirić, Staycation, a collaborative symposium and exhibition at Catinca Tabacaru Gallery and Sandwich in Bucharest (2021-2022); VIDEO+RADIO+LIVE , a collaborative exhibition organised by Catinca Tabacaru Gallery, Sandwich, Suprainfinity, Ivan Gallery, Sector 1, and Plan B, making part of the Art Encounters Biennial in Timișoara (2021); and the Immaterial Salon at Art-O-Rama in Marseilles (2021).
