Daniel Knorr

We make it happen

Opening: 14.02.2021,

While the Documenta was being presented in Kassel during 2018, art enthusiasts from around the world witnessed a confusing spectacle. The tower known as the Zwehrenturm was seen to be constantly emitting white smoke. Something that looked like a fire was actually an installation by the artist Daniel Knorr. Shortly before in the Athens section of the Documenta, he had acted as a sort of archaeologist of everyday life. With a monumental scrap press, he compressed found objects and refuse which he had gathered from the streets of Athens, now turning them into catalogues which the visitors of the Documenta could purchase as unique editions. Knorr is acknowledged to be a master of shifting meanings and an artist of participation. It is not often easy for viewers of his art to feel themselves to be uninvolved. He often even empowers them to active participation; each concerned individual telephoning the Kassel fire department became a part of the work of art which, as an evanescent event, now lives on principally in the stories it has engendered.
In collaboration with the Kunsthalle Tübingen, the IKOB – Museum for Contemporary Art is presenting the first solo exhibition in Belgium devoted to Knorr’s oeuvre.
