Star Work № 10: Geschlossene Scheune [Closed Barn]

Wolfgang Nestler

In 1997 in the context of the exhibition project Volle Scheunen, Wolfgang Nestler developed a site-specific installation – an installation which has been partly reconstructed as STAR WORK No. 10.
What Nestler takes on as a theme for this work is a state of transition in which one cannot be certain of what exists, but at least of the fact that something is evolving. In 1938 Otto Freundlich stated: ‘Creating movement and action in the artistic picture is the task of that type of art which has shifted from the state of being to the state of becoming. Being has no ethics; becoming, however, does.’ In equivalence to this thought, the image of the screech owl summons up in us a series of associations, of memories and impressions, of experience and dream. It is possible, not to contemplate and understand, but to see and perceive the bird, its flight, the space in which it moves. This is like feeling one’s way forward, engendering a mental souvenir. Or as Wolfgang Nestler says: ‘like the colour of motionless air.’
