Roman Lang, 2021

PFX-1

Acrylic, colored pencil, spray paint on multiplex board
230 cm x 180 cm

With the painterly color fields and the interwoven wood structure, Roman Lang counteracts an expectation of the public, which at first glance sees itself confronted with a descendant of the hard-edge painting of the 1960s/1970s as well as the direction Shaped Canvas developed from it. Lang calls his large-format, acrylic and spray-painted wooden panels Shaped Boards: virtuosically and with the insouciance of a street artist, he subverts the standards and expectations and thereby creates something new, wild, surprising, slightly oblique. Sometimes two-dimensional, sometimes spatially interpreted; sometimes consisting of added elements, sometimes of heterogeneous forms that contrast with each other and make the works dynamic.
