A Rock Reduced to its Ground Plan on a Scale of 1:1 / Mountain out of Rock Dust

Sandstone, 28 × 45 × 0,7 cm and pulverised sandstone

“With the grinding of the rock down to a thin, minimal surface, the rock is present as a medium; but the surface, together with the title, points towards a graphic, planimetrical representation. Is the stone surface accordingly a reference to the rock, which was originally shaped like a mountain – in other words, a sign? Can a sign consist of the same material as the original towards which it points? Or is it a matter here of a new original, a flat rock which refers to nothing other than itself?” (Nora Mertes, 2013)
