On the slopes of the Vaalserberg, between three countries and four languages, the second edition of MAPAWAY will take place this summer: a cross-border cartography festival combining walking, sensing and making. From a cultural basecamp halfway up the route to the tripoint, MAPAWAY invites you to explore the landscape in new ways – with maps as guide, form, memory and conversation partner.

Theme 2025: SOURCES

From springs of water to sources of inspiration, from navigation systems to raw materials: during MAPAWAY, the concept of the source will be explored in all its meanings. Through shared expeditions, MapLabs, workshops and walking activities, the borderland surrounding the Vaalserberg becomes a living learning environment. Expect activities such as making collages from historical maps, taking field notes, observing mountain outfits or learning about clouds and weather maps.

MAPAWAY 2025 is organised by the Institute of Cartopology in collaboration with Stichting NAP+246, IKOB and DAV Sektion Aachen, and is financially supported by Stichting Vaals Verbind(t), the Elisabeth Strouven Fund, the research group What Art Knows, the European Union and the Small Project Fund “People to People” of Interreg Meuse-Rhine (NL-BE-DE).
