To complement Yann Freichels’ exhibition DANS L’EMPIRE DE L’EMPEREUR TOMATO KETCHUP, IKOB presents a three-part film programme on the Open Art Sunday on Sunday 2 June. The event will take place in the IKOB cinema. Admission is free and everyone is cordially invited. Visitors can attend one or more film screenings and can come and go as they please.

The Kids Unite film programme focuses on uprisings carried out or inspired by protagonists from different eras. From a young preacher in 15th century Germany to children rebelling in a French boarding school to a feminist uprising in dystopian New York: dissatisfaction, unrest and the resulting group dynamics are portrayed in the three films in different ways and confronted with their respective social structures.

ABOUT THE FILMS

Der Pfeifer von Niklashausen (Alfred Jungraithmayr, BRD, 1981, 73 Minuten)
DE
The documentary film shows us the village of Niklashausen, where a folk play about the shepherd, musician and preacher Hans Böhm is to be performed again. The figure known today as Pfeifer Hans was burned as a heretic in the 15th century after his sermons on social justice and the depravity and corruption of the ruling classes mobilised thousands of people. While preparations for the play are underway, conversations with the villagers show how much this past still moves them today.

Zéro de Conduite (Jean Vigo, France, 1933, 45 minutes)
FR with english subtitles
In this film, which was banned in France until 1946, we meet a group of boarding school students who come into conflict with the rigid rules of the school system. Over time, their little pranks and escapades develop into a veritable coup d'état against their despotic institution. Inspired by his own boarding school experiences, Jean Vigo shows us his anarchistic vision of childhood in this classic film.

Born in Flames (Lizzie Borden, USA, 1983, 80 minutes)
EN with german subtitles
This dystopian documentary-style film is set 10 years after a social democratic revolution in the USA. Partiarchal power relations continue to dominate society. Two feminist groups around the pirate radio stations Radio Ragazza and Phoenix Radio join a non-hierarchical army that wants to put an end to the systemic forms of violence of racism, classism and sexism.
