Sorry

Installation (lacquered concrete, cardboard, tape)
59 × 94 × 26 cm

The 35-cm-high concrete sculpture of a woman in traditional costume looks inquiringly at a seemingly ramshackle cardboard construction. The ensemble created in 1987 by the Belgian concept artist appears absurd and out-of-place. It numbers among the “Sorry Works”, a series by Bijl that depicts surreal situations. This is an encounter of the third kind. Hidden in the packaging is something that is basically trivial: a lamp. Upon discovering what is inside, the viewer unfortunately continues to have no answer to the question as to what is meant here. Thus the work becomes all the more a projection surface for the viewer’s own mental pictures. (Lea Daxelmüller)
