Deep Jaw Relaxation

Andrea Éva Győri was born in 1985 in Budapest and is considered to be one of the most interesting Hungarian artists of her generation. Her main focus consists of a painfully honest inquiry into feminine desire on the one hand, and into the themes of pain and disease on the other. Her works, which she has recently realised mostly in drawings, video and ceramics, are marked by an unremitting investigation of the human body and mind. The principal characteristic of her work is an unswerving honesty with which she approaches the persons being depicted. Thus already in 2012 she began a special project: since she had no shower in her flat at that time, she had herself be invited to take a shower at other persons’ places of residence. In recompense, the owners of the respective showers could document her act of showering. For the next-to-last Manifesta in Zurich in 2016, she got together with a sex therapist and researched the female orgasm. After Andrea Eva Győri had created an intimate atmosphere of honesty, trust and pleasure, she made drawings of masturbating women who came into her space in order to share their sexual fantasies and experiences with her through their masturbation. Arising since then has been an abundance of drawings that first seem naive, but then prove to be a visually riveting collection of sexual motifs and practices which, freed from all taboos, issue a challenge to both male and female viewers.
The tearing down of taboos is another of the artist’s major concerns, one which she brings to expression in a painful manner through a new project. For her exhibition at the Vleeshal in Middelburg (The Netherlands) in 2018, Andrea Eva Győri developed a new series of drawings, sculptures and videos which offer revealing insights into the way she handles her own illness of cancer. For the exhibition at the IKOB, the artist is creating new works which, in a first extensive survey exhibition, are intended to display the oeuvre of this still-young artist.
