The artist Jürgen Claus, who was born in Berlin in 1935 and has lived since 1989 in such places as Baelen in eastern Belgium, is considered to be one of the pioneers of media art. The exhibition at the IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art is conceived more as a presentation of works than as a classic retrospective, even if the visitors to the exhibition will be offered a profound insight into the art of this exceptional artist through three thematically organized “atolls”.

His greatest achievements include, not only the introduction of the issues of ecology to art, but also an extension of the field of artistic activity to the seas and oceans. His underwater happenings and exhibitions made (art) history. In this exhibition, Jürgen Claus accordingly looks both far into the past and far into the future of a human species which must ask itself how it can continue to impact upon the earth without inevitably doing away with itself.
