Sixteen sound pieces for a SONIC CHAIR sc01.

After having been presented in Cologne, Münster and Dortmund, the SONIC CHAIR and its sound pieces are now being presented at IKOB - Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen, Belgium. The concept of the SONIC CHAIR sound pieces was developed for the soundwaves series on sound art which ran in Cologne in 2017 and 2018 and was conceived and developed by curator Georg Dietzler.

Artists from the noise music scene have composed pieces for the SONIC CHAIR sc01, a piece of loudspeaker designer furniture that can be rotated by 350 degrees. Similar to a musical instrument, the shape of the SONIC CHAIR is determined by acoustics. Sitting in the sound center of the chair supports the spatiality of the recordings. With loudspeakers in the armchair canopy, low bass frequencies are transmitted to the user's back via a structural sound membrane.

The sixteen presented sound pieces move between abstract, electronic ambience, puristic field recordings, layered guitar drones, manipulated everyday objects and generated noise narratives, as well as sound art, jazz and experimental pop. Each piece can be selected individually using a selection menu.

“Works at the interface between art and music like to fall between the chairs. The ability to understand noise as something musical gives us the opportunity to experience another dimension with our senses, to experience spatiality. Sound art means being surprised by ideas that are lovingly manifested in sound. And if works on the interface between art and music like to fall between the chairs, with the SONIC CHAIR there is a special armchair that invites you to sit and listen with its built-in loudspeakers and many audio pieces to choose from.” - Text fragment by Achim Zepezauer for mexhibition 2018, at the Künstlerhaus Dortmund.

The first four pieces were commissioned by Georg Dietzler/gerngesehen.de, pieces 5 to 8 were selected by Erhard Hirt of cuba-cultur in Münster, pieces 9 to 12 by Till Kniola/ aufabwegen, Cologne and pieces 13 to 16 by Achim Zepeauer/mex, Dortmund.

The presentation in Eupen is a cooperation between meakusma npo and Georg Dietzler/gerngesehen.de, Cologne.
